Hey guys,
On my rural prac at a Community Health Centre (therefore treating a lower socio-economic population) I have come across a lot of chronic pain (predominantly LBP). I have tried to focus on ‘hands off’ Rx and one patient in particular I just worked on relaxation techniques and educating her movement isn’t bad for her pain, etc. Has anyone had any prac’s where they’ve dealt with a lot of chronic pain pts or been taught some really helpful techniques to use with chronic pain pts? Just after some tips on what I could try next time???

hey!
I haven't done any work in the area of chronic pain, but i am currently in neuro-rehab where a lot of the pt's have pain (from increased tone, mechanical shortening, muscle imbalance, etc) for a long time so I guess they could be considered 'chronic pain' pt's. One of the pt's I was working with today had a stroke over a year ago and has just had botox injections in his biceps to try and improve the length and function of his UL. The physio that normally works with him was showing me some techniques for the UL and the main point of each exercise was that the pt was in control of the exercise and therefore could control the amount of pain associated with it... one thing I learnt was internal pt control is a really good way to 'desensitise' a pt and help break the fear avoidance cycle, definitely something to consider when working with chronic pt's!!
