wasting time

Hey guys, Im still on my musculo prac at the moment and like most musculo pracs I am required to come out in between my assessment and treatment to speak to my supervisor about what I have found and what I am planning to do. Whilst I think this is very important as clearly after only two weeks of musculo I definatley dont know everything (or very much at all!) it is becoming increasingly frustrating. I find that it just breaks up the session too much and many times I end up leaving my pt alone in the cubicle while I am desperatley trying to find my supervisor. Quite often my supervispor is either busy with his own pts or one of the other students is speaking with him about their pts. It is a tricky situation because whilst I think it is crucial in developing our clinical reasoning and making sure we are giving the pt the best treatment it also cuts into their appointment time quite a bit and therefore they dont get as much from the session as they possibly could! Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this issue?

Hey Kayz,

Ah the frustrations of being on prac! I know exactly what you mean, when I was on my outpt musculo prac I always found it incredibly annoying to have to stop my Ax, FIND my supervisor, WAIT for him to have a spare minute and then go back in to check something I had neglected to clarify, then go back out again...
It not only makes you feel incompetent but the poor pt has to have a lot of patience (and a loose schedule)...However I must say, despite my frustration this process is incredibly necessary for us to develop clear clinical reasoning skills with our lack of experience, and often due to time constraints the supervisors cant be in the room during our Ax to cut down these time costs.
And there is light at the end of the tunnel, cos I'm sure by the end of this week you will be doing both subj. and obj. Ax THEN chat so that will give you better flow!

All the best xox

Yes I have, like most of us, been in this situation. I think it is unavoidable really as its the only way to demonstrate your knowlegde and assessment skills to your supervisor and ensure the patient does get effective treatment.
The only thing I can suggest, which I am sure you would do anyway :)... As I am leaving the patient I explain "it may take some time for me to be next in line to speak to ______ (my supervisor) and then go through my findings and ideas for treatment so I we can confirm that you are receiving the best treatment possible"
If there is a queue to see the supervisor I tell them if they can speak to me next and meet me in the room I am in. Then I keep my patient company and maybe do some more assessment or educational advice...etc.

Hi Kayla

I understand your frustrations with having to clarify and justify your treatment decisions with your supervisor. I also understandthat it may sometimes interrupt your train of thought and also feel like you are not only wasting your time but also the patients.

I reckon rach is right in saying that even though it may seem time consuming, it is a necessary process. what i found helpful during my musculo prac was formulating my treatment and also considering the rationale behind my treatment, going through all this is my head while waiting for my turn. This helped me to keep my mind clear of what i was going to do and be certain and more confident of my treatment options.

I guess a positive way to look at it is that is as we get more treatment rationales affirmed by our supervisor, the closer we areto becoming qualifiesd physios with the basic skills to enable us to work in an independent environment once we start working.
