Hey guys,
I'm currently on my neuro prac and loving it! Was just thinking about my experiences on prac and the number of areas I've been exposed to. I guess it's relevant at the moment as we are now all looking into jobs for next year. One of the things I was pondering is how much we are shaped by our experiences on prac, and not only that but also how guided we are into choosing a selected field (Private practice vs hospital, neuro vs musculo, etc) based simply on our exposure to selected areas. Looking back I have now had three neuro pracs over the last three years, and now find myself interested in working in a hospital, with a bias towards neuro physiotherapy. In contrast I have only ever had one musculo prac, which I didn't particularly enjoy, and now feel slightly unqualified and unconfident in the area and hesitant to go straight into a private practice job. I'm guessing those people who have had more experience, and more positive reinforcement in this area may be more inclined to pursue this type of job as a new grad?!
I wonder if that's true for everyone? and if it is then does it come back to the responsibility of the university to attempt to give everyone a more equal exposure to the available areas of physio??
Just thinking out loud really, and I'd be interested in what others think!
Have a good week!

Definitely rach! I totally agree, and i think sometimes its really not evenly spread with the type/quality of pracs we get. I dont really know how the uni could do it any better though, can you imagine how hard it is to place 90 students for 6 pracs each anyway! I also think the type of work experience (if any) you do throughout uni would influence our career choices. For example i've done sports training since before we even started uni and am interested in musculo whereas others who've done PTA work in hospitals may be more inclined to work there. I think it comes down to confidence and enjoyment and obviously something you are good at and have more experience/confidence in you are going to enjoy more...
Take care hun

I've been wondering the same thing. It's also a worry when some pracs, particularly in musculo, are 'better' than others in terms of continuing ed tutorials etc. I think it's difficult to get everyone out of the degree with the same balanced experience, but it would be nice if there was some standardisation in terms of how many tutes you get etc. It's also concerning when applying for jobs at hospitals - for example I've had four pracs at RPH in the last year, and only one at charlie's. Consequently I'm guessing my chances for a job at Charlie's are pretty slim? I think Shani's got a point in that it really is up to us to pursue extra-curricular activities to further explore which areas we are interested in and gain experience, I think it would be hard for the uni to do it much differently xoxo
